8 top tips for a happy 2017.
The ‘New Year’ celebration is a time when people reflect upon the year just passed with 2016 being full of heartbreak and loss for many. Some may write a set of new years resolutions that sadly can be very difficult to keep.
Thai people celebrate ‘Thai New Years day’ on the 13th of April each year with the Songkran festival, which literally translated means ‘astrological passage’ (transformation or change).
So rather than setting unrealistic goals for the new year we thought we would suggest making some small, achievable changes to help promote a happier year in 2017.
1. Book a holiday or do some travelling
With a ‘New Year’ and a world of opportunities to explore, traveling can increase mental wellbeing by breaking routines, providing new experiences and creating memories. Travel to Thailand (hehe we had to sneak that one in) Try to go somewhere new and exotic or just take a short road trip. Whatever you choose, rest assured a holiday will provide you with some wonderful adventures.
2. Be kind to others
You may not be able to control how kind other people are to you, but you can always control how kind you are to others. Think about the truly kind people in your life, what they do and how they make you feel. Kindness is unbelievably important and often doesn’t cost a thing. Try holding the door open for someone or pay a meaningful compliment. Telephone a lonely person and ask how they are. Or, show more affection to the people in your life.
Remember, one of the most beautiful things about life is that every day is a new opportunity to recreate ourselves and be kinder to others.
3. Spend more time with family & friends
Spending time with family and friends is the best way to create wonderful memories. As we get older and busier, meeting work deadlines etc. the time we once had for our loved ones seems to lessen. Finding time to spend with friends and family is sadly one of the first things to go when life gets busy. If we have learned anything from 2016 it is that life is short so in 2017 set some time aside each week to catch up with people you care about. Arrange a movie night at home, a play date for the kids, or a gathering at your favourite restaurant. Remember spending time with friends and family is good for you and them.
4. Play more
Just because you’re a grown up now does not mean you can’t play and have fun! It is said that there are many benefits to playing for adults such as boosting creativity and relieving stress. Organise a games night at home and play your favourite board game with the family or spend some time hanging out with the kids (lets face it they instinctively know how to have fun). At the end of the day, it is important for you to find out what fun means to you and make time to do what you love………..oh and dance, even when people are watching!
5. Be more grateful
Showing gratitude can help you feel happier and allow you to get along better with others. Try to be thankful for anything in your life that makes you feel positive on some level such as appreciating where you live and the opportunities you have. Remember the small things too, such as the sun shining, someone giving you a compliment or being able to laugh at a funny joke with a friend.
6. Try new things
In the words of Albert Einstein, “Insanity is doing the same things over and over again but expecting different results”.
When faced with challenges or unexpected changes you’re pushed to look for new solutions which can result into amazing discoveries and growth.
If you do the same things the same way you always have you can easily fall into a rut.
If this is the case then its time to step out of your comfort zone and try new things. Start by making small changes such as trying new cuisines from different cultures at a new restaurant. Pick up a new hobby or learn a new skill. There is always something else to learn, try, create and experience.
7. Eat well and exercise
Losing weight is probably the most common new years resolution especially after an indulgent Christmas. Instead of starving yourself on the newest fad diet that may see you giving up after a week, just keep it simple and make small changes. Eat more fresh fruit and veggies, swap soft drinks with water, reduce sugar and move! You don’t have to throw yourself into the most challenging exercise routine and get up at 5am to see results, just keep moving and be as active as you possibly can. Try getting off the bus a stop before your usual stop, take the stairs instead of the lift etc. and get plenty of rest.
Remember no matter how slow you go you’re still lapping everyone on the couch.
Greet the New Year with a smile and commit to staying positive no matter what happens try to focus on the good of the situation. Every time something good happens to you and your family in 2017 (no matter how small) write it down on a piece of paper and place it in a box. On New Years Eve 2017, open the box, read and reflect on all the wonderful things that happened throughout the year!
Wishing you all a safe and prosperous 2017!
