How many Thai restaurants are there in Newtown? I started to count once, beginning at the top of King Street and continuing until I reached 17.

How many Thai restaurants are there in Newtown? I started to count once, beginning at the top of King Street and continuing until I reached 17.

That's possibly a world record for the Highest Density of Thai Restaurants Outside Thailand. It's certainly proof of Newtown's, and nearby Enmore's, reputation as the destination for fast, cheap, good, and not quite so good, Thai food.

Near the middle of King Street is Thai Pothong, a restaurant that, from the street, resembles the supa-centa of Thai restaurants. It is massive, loud and full of people (more than 200 can be seated) who are happy, chatty and eating tasty food.

Outside is a banner proclaiming, "Voted the best Thai Restaurant in Sydney 1998, 2000, 2001, 2002", an incredible achievement which is clarified upon further reading, "by the Thai Restaurant Association". Thai Pothong is no Sailor's Thai, but its food reveals effort, authenticity and a keen preference for fresh ingredients.

One of our entrees, four flavours tofu, features wedges of pillowy tofu dripping in a spicy sweet and sour sauce. The second, satay chicken, has marinated chicken resting in a sweet, thick sauce with ample chunks of peanut. Of the mains, my fellow pronounces the green curry with chicken, bamboo shoots, green chilli, eggplant and basil "good" between mouthfuls, while my chicken with cashew nut is enjoyable and fresh but not as tasty as the excellent bean curd. The winning dish is a roast duck salad with extremely tender meat and a proliferation of coriander, onion and mint garnish.
