I stumbled recently on this hidden gem in Newtown. After living in Sydney my whole life, I can’t believe I never tried this restaurant before. The decor is extremely authentic with Thai artwork, sculptures, and majestic lamps creating a magical environment for a dinner or birthday party. It is probably the largest Thai restaurant in Australia, and there’s reason why.
The staff are attentive and give exceptional service, the food is amazing and a notch above all the usual Thai restaurants, and the wine list and food selection caters for every taste. I highly recommend this restaurant as one of the best Asian food restaurants in Sydney. Great for birthdays, parties and functions. Awesome!

My husband and I came in for our first year wedding anniversary and we were
amazed at how outstanding the service and food was. It was by far the best
restaurant experience I have ever had. The service was incredible and the
food was delicious. We will be coming back as it was just amazing. We can
not thank you enough for making our night so enjoyable, everything about it
was fantastic. For such amazing food and service we were surprised at the
price. But because the price isn’t expensive we were able to leave a much
better tip than normal.
Thank you so much

Strolling through the streets of Newtown on Mothers Day, we came upon the Thai Pothong. The place was bustling with people. Without any reservation, we were given a table without any problem or waiting. We ordered three dishes plus rice which was quickly served. The flavour was divine. Each dish had a unique flavour that oozed with tastiness and deliciousness. Even though the place was busy, each table was given attention and consideration. Having tasted the exquisite dishes,I can see why many of the reviews for this restaurant are positively glowing. Perhaps, some may say that the cost is a tad expensive, but I would say that it falls into the very reasonable category, especially for a restaurant with high quality service, ambience and scrumptious food. I hope that it continues to maintain and live up to its superb reputation.

By far one of, if not the best thai restaurants in Sydney. My/our order mainly is chicken cashew, Pad Thai, Massaman Curry, Satay Chicken. So that is all I can comment on. To give you a brief example of how good their chicken cashew is, on my recent visit to Thailand, after having thai friends show us the ‘best’ thai restaurants in Bangkok and Phuket, I was so unsatisfied, and still had an immense craving for the thai pathong version. It is that damn good!
I am very picky about ingredients, and a Thai chef once educated me, if chicken Cashew has carrots in it, the restaurant is cutting costs. Its been my rule of thumb, only 2 in Newtown don’t use it [T.P is one of them].
The service is beyond amazing. Yet to see it matched by any restaurant in Sydney [even though I am a firm believer that service should not be the reason you visit a restaurant]. Very loud on weekends though.
Interested to see some perspectives on affordability on this blog. Seem to be seeing a lot of posts saying ‘huge portions that were overpriced’ what’s odd is that this paradox just goes to show you how excellent the food quantity and quality truly is.
If you have a clue about food-service-value, then this place is Highly recommended! [so is the Pathong orchid cocktail].
